Make your own Nature Watercolours
Materials
  • Flowers
  • Leaves
  • Bark
  • 5-6 small bowls
  • Boiling water
  • Paint brush
  • A4 watercolour paper or white card
  • Fine black pen
Step 1

Pick a variety of different coloured flowers, leaves and bark from your garden or neighbourhood. Break up the petals, rip up the leaves and bark into smaller portions and place each group in their own individual bowl.

Step 2

Boil a small amount of water and fill each bowl with just enough water to cover the petals, leaves or bark. Make sure you keep the boiling water bowls out of reach from small hands until the water cools down.

Step 3

We used: Purple Petunias, Marigolds, Leopard tree bark, Red/green leaves, Pink flowers

Watch each bowl to see if there are any instant reactions.

Step 4

Mix each bowl around a little with your paint brush to speed up the process. We had an instant reaction with the purple petunias. If you can get your hands on different coloured petunias or bougainvillea flowers, these will create great natural colours.

Leave the bowls to soak for at least 1 hour. Leave the mixture for longer if you want deeper colours.

Step 5

Grab your paint brush, and white card/paper. Mix each colour around with your brush and begin painting. You may want to pre plan what you’re going to paint, or just paint freely.

Step 6

Once your painting has dried, either leave your painting in its beautiful natural form, or outline the painted shapes with a fine black pen, and draw in some detail. Your painted artwork would be beautiful as a card, wrapping paper, or a framed artwork for someone special.

Step 7

We created a painting of flowers and bees to represent where we had sourced our natural watercolour paints from.
